Carbon Abatement & Credits
Clear
At CSM Energy we can help our clients maximise their green credentials and financial returns by enabling them to cut their GHG emissions from pre-mine drainage, operating and abandoned coal mines. We add value through qualifying these projects for carbon credits with the appropriate scheme, ongoing legislative reporting and we can manage the monetization of these carbon credits.

Coal mines are increasingly being pressured to report on environmental impact and GHG emissions and abatement measures. Existing and new regulatory regimes are being planned to provide for companies to restrict their own emissions or offset them through carbon credits.

Coal mines, in particular, offer significant carbon credit generating opportunities. Mines that are already implementing CMM projects and reducing their carbon footprint verse venting the gas are using this to maximum effect in their Sustainability Reports that are well received by stakeholders (employees, regulators, investors etc).

Flaring gas abates more GHG’s compared to the power generation option as power stations emit GHG themselves. However gas generation emits approximately 50% the level of “best practice” coal fired power generation. In addition, burning coal seam gas emits virtually no sulphur or ash and about 32% on NOx compared to coal.

There are a number of other GHG abatement options that can be considered that could be investigated to further reduce a coal mines carbon footprint.

CSM Energy can assist coal mines with the following:

• Evaluation of whether a project is likely to qualify for carbon credits;
• Stringent qualification and registration process for carbon credits,
• Selection of approved verification organisations to provide independent monitoring & verification of emission reductions.
• Ongoing contact with the relevant approval bodies;
• Secure the best possible price for their carbon credits.
• We track prices and trends and know the key market players.
• Our expertise along with our preferred partner AGL Energy’s diverse portfolio of projects and financial skills, means we are in a strong position to negotiate the best prices.
